The Mahama government has announced a major transition to solar-powered street lighting as part of efforts to ease pressure on the national grid and improve energy efficiency.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, revealed that 23,500 all-in-one solar streetlights will be installed across the country, covering a total stretch of 700 kilometers.
This initiative aims to reduce the country’s energy demand by 200-300 megawatts, as streetlights currently account for over 200 megawatts of energy consumption during peak periods. The shift to solar power is expected to make a significant contribution to energy sector efficiency.
The solar streetlight project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to adopt renewable energy solutions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By transitioning to solar power, Ghana can alleviate pressure on the national grid and promote sustainable energy practices.
