The government is preparing a comprehensive regeneration programme for the Agbogbloshie enclave, with plans for environmental restoration, industrial development and the construction of housing facilities.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga disclosed the plans on Monday, October 5, during the Government Accountability Series.
According to Mr Ayariga, the programme will begin with the systematic clearing of waste and restoration of the degraded environment before the development of industrial and residential facilities.
He said the government was also considering the provision of low-cost housing within the area to ensure that workers can live closer to employment opportunities.
“The Ministry will pursue a comprehensive programme of environmental restoration and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people,” he said.
Mr Ayariga said the initiative forms part of a broader government strategy to promote local economic development while addressing the environmental and urban planning challenges confronting the enclave.
He explained that the regeneration programme is expected to create opportunities for businesses and support job creation, particularly for young people.
The Minister also disclosed that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) would be supported to identify economically viable areas capable of attracting investment and generating employment.
The government’s proposed intervention is expected to combine environmental rehabilitation with economic and housing development as part of efforts to transform Agbogbloshie into a more productive and sustainable urban area.
