Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has assured that a Mahama-led administration will empower public university councils and management to carry out their statutory responsibilities without undue interference. Speaking at the 58th Special Congregation of KNUST, she stressed that the government’s commitment to academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
“The government places a high premium on academic freedom and ensures smooth functioning of government councils and management,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated. “I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is firmly committed to empowering university councils and managements to perform their statutory duties without undue political interference.”
She indicated that while the government would ensure universities comply with relevant policies, regulations, and standards, its interventions through the Ministry of Education would be limited strictly to ensuring compliance—not political interference. This assurance is expected to boost the confidence of university administrators and academics, allowing them to focus on their core mandate of teaching, research, and community engagement.
