Proceedings at the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi took an unexpected turn on Friday afternoon when Ebenezer Frimpong, accused of stealing a police armoured vehicle in a dramatic incident, pleaded with the presiding judge to assist him in joining the Ghana Police Service.
The 26-year-old, described as remorseful, knelt before the court and appealed for leniency as the charges were read for the first time. Presiding judge, His Honour Jephtha Appau, acknowledged the plea.
Frimpong, an unemployed resident of Antwi Agyei Nkwanta in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, was arrested on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, by personnel from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit.
Presenting the case, Police Prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre told the court that the accused resides at Antwi Agyeikrom in the same district.
According to the prosecution, on April 14, General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, a police driver, was conveying an armoured vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for servicing. While en route, the officer reportedly experienced a stomach upset and parked near the Nkawie market to purchase medication from a nearby pharmacy.
Shortly thereafter, the accused was allegedly seen driving the vehicle in the direction of Abuakwa–Kumasi. An alarm was raised, prompting a coordinated response involving MTTD motor riders and SWAT personnel, who subsequently arrested the suspect in an operation at Mim, near Abuakwa.
In court, Frimpong reiterated his desire to enlist in the Ghana Police Service and appealed to the judge to use his influence to facilitate his recruitment.
The prosecution requested that the accused be remanded into police custody to allow for further investigations. However, His Honour Jephtha Appau instead ordered that Frimpong be remanded into prison custody, citing concerns for his safety.
The accused is expected to reappear before the court on May 4, 2026.
