The Minister of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that the upcoming anniversary marking national freedom will carry a price tag of approximately GH¢1.5 million.
During an interview with Joy FM which was monitored by Ghanaianradar, Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted the ceremony has been substantially trimmed as part of broader efforts to curb state expenditure while still honoring the historical occasion. “This is purely a measure to reduce expenditure. We’ve chosen to preserve funds and direct them toward other urgent national priorities. The budget reflects a 95 percent decrease from previous editions, coming in at roughly GH¢1.5 million,” he explained.
He highlighted that earlier anniversary parades typically required around GH¢20 million from state coffers.
“Reaching sixty-nine years as a sovereign entity stands as a considerable milestone,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu remarked, underscoring that the occasion retains its national significance regardless of its reduced scope.
He contemplated Ghana’s journey since independence, stressing themes of national cohesion and broad participation. “Our path has seen both difficulties and successes, yet overall, we’ve maintained our collective identity. We’ve established a society that welcomes all, characterized by mutual religious and social respect,” the spokesperson said. Mr Kwakye Ofosu further acknowledged the nation’s continuous advancement.
“Despite encountering obstacles, we’ve consistently achieved forward movement. Since this administration assumed office, numerous initiatives have enhanced economic conditions. The financial landscape currently stands stronger than its previous state,” he continued.
In parallel fashion, the previous year’s 68th anniversary took place at the same Flagstaff House location, departing from the expansive displays that previously involved numerous student participants.
