President John Dramani Mahama has made temporary adjustments to his cabinet following the devastating loss of two key ministers in a military helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Wednesday. In response to the tragedy, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has been tasked with additionally serving as the Minister for Defence. Likewise, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah will act as the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology until further notice, as announced by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
This decision comes after Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, lost their lives in the helicopter crash on August 6 in the Adansi Akrofuom District. The ministers were traveling to Obuasi for an official government engagement when the incident occurred. The crash claimed the lives of eight individuals, including the two ministers.
The interim appointments aim to maintain operational stability in vital sectors of national governance as Ghana mourns the loss of the distinguished public servants. National flags are flying at half-mast across the country. An official investigation into the crash’s cause has been initiated by the Ghana Armed Forces and pertinent state agencies. President Mahama is slated to lead a state tribute honoring the deceased in the upcoming days as preparations for their funerals begin.
