The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a stern warning to cattle rearers, announcing that stray cattle found roaming the city will be seized, slaughtered, and used to feed inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison. This decision aims to address the growing issue of cattle disrupting public life, which the Mayor describes as “unworthy of the city’s stature”.
“If you have cattle and if they stray in the vicinity of KMA, be assured that from May 1, they will be killed and given to Kumasi Central Prison for food,” the Mayor stated. He emphasized the need to keep the city clean, particularly along major routes like the one from the airport to Manhyia Palace. “I cannot sit for visitors come to Kumasi [and] from the airport to Manhyia, and all they see are faecal matter from cattle.”
This move is part of broader efforts by the Ashanti Regional Security Council to tackle the issue of stray cattle in Kumasi. A task force has been formed to remove these animals and protect the city’s greenery, including newly planted trees. The Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, highlighted the importance of engaging skilled individuals to handle the cattle, ensuring the preservation of the city’s landscape.
