President John Dramani Mahama has directed an expansion in recruitment across Ghana’s security services, increasing the number of personnel to be enlisted from 20,000 to 40,000 over the next four years.
The directive was issued after a high-level meeting between the President and the heads of the country’s security agencies, alongside the Minister for the Interior and the Acting Minister for Defence, to review the ongoing recruitment process.
Following a briefing on the progress of the exercise, President Mahama instructed that the recruitment numbers be doubled to strengthen the country’s security architecture and create additional opportunities for young people seeking to join the services.
The President also tasked the leadership of the security agencies to ensure that the recruitment process remains transparent and fair.
The meeting was attended by key officials within the national security structure, including the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the President, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, the National Security Coordinator, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Prisons Service, the Director-General of the Fire Service, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
The directive was announced in a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The expansion forms part of government efforts to strengthen national security institutions while ensuring a more inclusive and credible recruitment process across the various agencies.
