President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism about the strength of Ghana’s economy, stating that measures implemented by his administration have positioned the country to weather external shocks.

Addressing participants during his Resetting Ghana Tour in the Bono Region, the President said the economy has become more resilient after a year of targeted interventions aimed at stabilisation and strengthening monetary systems.

He pointed to recurring global disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, as examples of how sudden events can destabilise economies that are not well-prepared.

According to him, emerging geopolitical tensions involving Israel and Iran further highlight the need for Ghana to maintain a strong economic buffer.

“If the fundamentals are not firm, any global shock can weaken the economy,” he noted, adding that his government has prioritised tightening the country’s monetary framework to ensure stability.

President Mahama said he is confident that the policies introduced within his first year in office have strengthened the economy sufficiently to withstand such pressures.

Beyond macroeconomic stability, he also outlined plans under the government’s proposed 24-hour economy model, which is expected to drive productivity and expand opportunities across the country.

He disclosed that modern market centres to be constructed in districts nationwide will be equipped with critical infrastructure, including a Women’s Development Bank, police and fire service stations, cold storage facilities, daycare centres, hospitality spaces, and transport terminals.

The initiative, he explained, is designed to support traders, particularly women, while promoting inclusive growth and a more efficient economic system.
