President John Dramani Mahama has called the recent fire at the Akosombo power hub a chance to overhaul vital facilities, after the incident sparked fresh electricity cuts nationwide.
The President spoke on Thursday, 30 April 2026, during a tour of the Akosombo Dam to review damage from the blaze, which hit a substation run by the Ghana Grid Company. Ghana (GRIDCo).
The fire destroyed crucial equipment, cutting over 1,000 megawatts from the national network and causing erratic power supply in many areas.
Addressing engineers and officials at the site, President Mahama said the setback opens the door to rebuild with better systems.
“This creates an opening because now that this challenge has occurred, it lets us install a more modern control room to serve this Akosombo Plant and keep it running for many more generations,” he stated.
He praised technical crews for their rapid action to resume operations, highlighting gains already made in steadying generation.
“You have four turbines back online, and he says you’re pulling another miracle and I’ll soon hear good news about the last two turbines returning,” he noted.
The President restated government’s pledge to back major state energy agencies, calling both GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority (VRA) vital to Ghana’s power industry.“VRA will remain one of the leading state-owned firms, and any support government can offer, we will keep offering,” he said.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor confirmed four generation units at the dam have been successfully brought back, with the rest set to resume service this week.
