President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the strategic importance of Nigeria’s stability to Ghana’s development, noting that the fortunes of both countries are closely interconnected.
Speaking at the African Heritage Awards 2026, he stated that Ghana has a vested interest in Nigeria’s success, particularly given its large population and regional influence.
According to the President, Nigeria’s stability is a matter of security concern for Ghana, as developments in the country have direct implications for the wider sub-region. He explained that instability in Nigeria, with its population exceeding 200 million, could generate significant ripple effects, including increased migration pressures on neighbouring states such as Ghana.
President Mahama remarked that Ghana’s well-being is closely tied to Nigeria’s progress, stressing that positive developments in Nigeria would contribute to stability and growth across West Africa. He further noted that challenges within Nigeria could have broader consequences, given its demographic and economic weight.
In addition to security and economic considerations, the President highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He observed that several ethnic groups in Ghana trace their origins to regions in Nigeria, including the Yoruba Kingdom.
His remarks underscore the interconnected nature of West African states and the broader regional implications of national stability and development.
