President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH¢40 million funding package to revitalise Ghana’s creative industry, with GH¢20 million dedicated specifically to the country’s film sector.
Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, the President described human creativity as a key driver of the future economy, particularly at a time when automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping the global labour market.
“Our economy will not be built only by traditional sectors but also by human creativity,” he said, adding that the creative industries have the potential to absorb workers displaced by emerging AI technologies.
He praised Ghanaian content creators for expanding the country’s global visibility through digital platforms. “Creatives using the new media are giving our nation greater prominence than we could have achieved through any first-class traditional media outlet,” he noted.
Under the new allocation, GH¢20 million will support the film industry, including productions within Kumawood, Gallywood and other emerging segments. Another GH¢20 million has been earmarked for other creative sub-sectors to stimulate growth across the broader arts ecosystem.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the financial injection would strengthen the industry’s capacity, create jobs and expand Ghana’s cultural footprint.
He further pledged personal support for the sector, assuring stakeholders that he would serve as a direct advocate for both tourism and the creative arts to enhance their local and international reach.
