President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government has taken back portions of public land following a review of suspect transactions, as part of a broader drive to enforce accountability in state asset management.
The President noted that authorities have also suspended the processing of titles linked to incomplete land allocations to block the wrongful disposal of public assets.
“We are committed to stopping the reckless and underpriced sale of state lands to politically connected persons and other powerful interests,” he stated.
He emphasised that public assets must be handled with openness and maintained that government lands should not be handed out at will or moved through secret deals.
Addressing a delegation from the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs during a visit to Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 21, he disclosed that government intends to table new laws to tighten supervision over the sale of public lands and other state properties.
“We are drafting legislation to make sure the disposal of public lands and other state assets follows clear, transparent legal processes and requires Parliament’s prior approval,” he said.
The President’s comments followed concerns raised by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, led by its President, Prof. Odaifio Welentsi III.
The Chiefs urged to be included in the Greater Accra Public Lands Protection Taskforce set up by Sector Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah to protect government lands in the region.
