President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts following the severe flooding that affected parts of Accra and other communities across southern Ghana.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency said the funds were approved in response to hours of unusually heavy rainfall that inundated several communities, leaving residents displaced and causing extensive damage to property.
According to the statement, GH¢150 million will be used to finance emergency relief operations for flood victims and affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million has been allocated to flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the recurrence of such disasters.
President Mahama also directed the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies conducting ongoing rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
Earlier in the day, the President undertook an aerial assessment of flood-hit communities to evaluate the extent of the destruction firsthand.
Following the assessment, he announced a series of interventions intended to provide immediate assistance to affected residents while strengthening long-term measures to improve flood resilience and reduce the impact of future flooding, the statement added.
