President John Dramani Mahama has called an emergency meeting of heads of security, aviation and port agencies to review Ghana’s border security architecture and strategies for tackling drug trafficking.
The crucial meeting is slated for Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Jubilee House, and follows the recent interception of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine valued at about US$261 million by French Customs officials from a container that originated from Ghana.
In an invitation letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, and chanced upon by this online portal on Monday, September 14, the presidency said the session will assess weaknesses in the border control regime and fashion out concrete steps to curb the smuggling of narcotics and other contraband.
Heads of the invited institutions are to attend with not more than one technical officer. They are also required to present brief reports on security lapses within their remit and recommend ways to enhance intelligence sharing, monitoring, cargo screening and joint enforcement operations.
The meeting also comes on the heels of concerns raised by the Minority in Parliament over Ghana’s response to major international drug seizures.
The Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has questioned the absence of high-profile arrests and prosecutions linked to such cases.
Among the institutions expected are the Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Customs Division of the GRA, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, terminal scanner operators, Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Navy, Meridian Port Services Ltd, National Intelligence Bureau, CID and Interpol of the Ghana Police Service, Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Airports Company Limited.
Earlier, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) says it has picked up three suspects believed to be connected to the ‘Bolle Jos’ cocaine trafficking syndicate after the French seizure.
According to NACOC, the suspects are in custody and are assisting investigations into their alleged involvement in the cocaine trafficking operation.
