Farmers nationwide will get free fertilisers in 2026, courtesy of President John Dramani Mahama, aiming to alleviate post-harvest struggles.
The move was announced at the inauguration of the first Farmer Services Centre in Takoratwene, Kwahu Afram Plains South District in the Eastern Region, part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy drive to boost agriculture and create jobs.
The centre will offer integrated services, including mechanised farming, certified seeds, equipment rental, irrigation aid, and storage facilities. The President stated that the free fertiliser policy replaces the existing subsidy scheme, targeting farmers hit by recent losses.
“This year, fertilisers will be given free; no cost to farmers,” he declared. He also highlighted infrastructure progress, including a 3.6km Afram River bridge contract awarded, with work set to start, and the Adawso-Agordeke road earmarked for upgrade under the Big Push programme.
“Yesterday, our team faced pontoon issues, but fishermen bailed us out. I’ve kept my promise – the bridge project is a go,” he said
