President John Dramani Mahama has suggested enacting a legislation to outlaw demands for romantic or sexual ties in return for job offers, calling the conduct exploitative and improper.
He spoke on Saturday, 2 May 2026, during a town hall meeting at Adweso in Koforidua, Eastern Region to close his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region.
Addressing attendees, the President criticised some male employers who allegedly require intimate relations from women before granting employment.
“One of the worst things, and I think we should pass a bill to make it punishable, is that sometimes if the employer or the person responsible for employing is a male, they demand some romantic relationship before they give them jobs. It is unacceptable. It must stop,” he stated.
He emphasised that individuals caught in such practices should face tough legal action, arguing that stronger rules are vital to shield women from job-place abuse.
President Mahama also restated his government’s resolve to enforce the Affirmative Action law, saying plans are in motion to reach 50-50 gender balance in state appointments by the close of 2028.He admitted the difficulty but said government stays focused on hitting the goal.
