Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has disclosed that the government’s Mahamacares initiative is designed to go beyond financial support for patients by investing heavily in healthcare infrastructure, medical research and specialist training.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Madam Darko-Opoku said the programme is intended to strengthen Ghana’s long-term response to the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, stroke, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

According to her, the Trust Fund will support the procurement of advanced diagnostic equipment needed for the effective detection and treatment of chronic illnesses. She explained that specialised technologies such as CT scanners, MRI machines and PET scan systems are essential for accurate diagnosis and determining appropriate treatment pathways for patients.

She further indicated that part of the initiative’s focus will be on improving healthcare infrastructure to enable medical facilities across the country to provide more specialised care for people living with chronic diseases.

Madam Darko-Opoku also underscored the importance of scientific research in understanding the rising number of deaths linked to non-communicable diseases in Ghana. She noted that the government considers research a critical component of developing effective prevention and treatment strategies.

As part of these efforts, she revealed that discussions have already commenced with University of Ghana regarding possible partnerships to support research activities under the Trust Fund.

In addition, the Administrator stressed the urgent need to expand the country’s pool of specialist healthcare professionals. She explained that managing complex conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases requires highly trained experts rather than relying solely on general medical practitioners.

The Mahamacares initiative forms part of the government’s broader healthcare agenda aimed at improving treatment outcomes and strengthening Ghana’s capacity to address the increasing burden of chronic illnesses nationwide.
