The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have cut off electricity from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations after torrential rain triggered major flooding at vital power installations across parts of the Greater Accra Region.
According to the two energy firms, the move was a safety step to save lives, defend equipment, and stop harm to the national grid as rising waters reached key transmission and distribution sites.
“We had to carry out a pre-emptive shutdown because the floods have reached important infrastructure at several substations, creating serious threats to both electrical systems and staff on the ground,” the companies said in a joint release on Sunday.
They further stated: “To protect people, property, and the electricity system, GRIDCo and ECG have opted to briefly cut supply from the impacted substations until it is safe to bring them back online.”
GRIDCo and ECG noted that technical teams are actively tracking the situation and conducting full reviews of how the flooding has affected both transmission and distribution assets.
The providers cautioned that other communities hit by floods could also see short-term outages if risks are detected.
“With the downpours and flooding continuing, residents should note that power may be briefly cut in additional areas as a safety measure to secure lives, property, and key grid assets whenever danger is spotted,” the notice added.
The utilities urged residents to stay alert and immediately notify the closest ECG office or use its customer support lines to report toppled poles, dangling or exposed cables, inundated electrical setups, and any other power-related dangers.
They said quick reports would aid fast response and help keep the public safe. GRIDCo and ECG expressed regret for the disruption caused by the blackouts and promised to work to reinstate supply once weather conditions stabilize and safety is assured.
