The Manhyia Palace Museum has emerged as the most visited tourist site in the Ashanti Region in early 2026, overtaking the Kumasi Zoo.
According to the Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Fredrick Adjei Rudolph, the museum has recorded about 120,000 visitors so far this year, slightly ahead of the zoo’s 118,000.
The Kumasi Zoo had previously been the region’s leading attraction, drawing 118,764 visitors in 2025 and ranking fourth nationwide.
Mr. Rudolph noted that domestic tourism continues to drive visitor numbers. In 2025, the Manhyia Palace Museum received over 102,000 Ghanaian visitors compared to about 17,900 foreign tourists, while the zoo recorded more than 117,000 local visitors and fewer than 1,000 foreign arrivals.
He also highlighted the untapped potential of Lake Bosomtwe, suggesting it could become a major tourism hub through ecotourism, cultural events, and water-based activities.
However, he pointed to challenges such as poor road access, waste management issues, pollution, and extortion as factors limiting the lake’s growth.
Mr. Rudolph believes that with proper investment and management, Lake Bosomtwe could generate significant revenue and rival top tourist sites in the country.
