Hundreds of undocumented migrants arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) are still being held at the GIS headquarters, awaiting repatriation to their respective countries. Despite being picked up on Friday, May 16, they continue to endure harsh conditions.
A visit by Channel One News at 7:04 p.m. confirmed that the foreign nationals remained in custody, with many, including children, sleeping in the open without mattresses or lighting. Canopies and mobile toilets have been provided, but the environment remains inadequate.
“We will deport them by the end of the day,” Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Relations at GIS, had earlier assured. However, it’s unclear where they will sleep if transportation arrangements fail to materialize.
The operation led to the arrest of 2,241 undocumented migrants, including 384 adult males, 525 adult females, 577 male children, and 755 female children. The GIS has yet to provide a timeline for completing the repatriation process.
