Minister Urges Nurses to Reconsider Strike

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations

The Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has appealed to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to call off their planned strike on June 9, 2025. The strike, announced on May 28, aims to push for better working conditions. Dr. Pelpuo warned that the industrial action could severely disrupt Ghana’s healthcare system and stressed the importance of dialogue between stakeholders.

In his appeal, Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that strikes have far-reaching effects on society and development, urging employers and stakeholders to work together to resolve issues amicably. He added that the government and health authorities must listen to the nurses’ concerns.

However, not all nursing associations support the strike. A joint statement by the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana and the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, among others, distanced themselves from the planned action, citing disagreements over a collective resolution’s interpretation.

The GRNMA has responded by accusing the dissenting unions of undermining efforts to improve working conditions for nurses and midwives, arguing that these groups have failed to prioritise the welfare of Ghanaian healthcare professionals [source not found in search results].
