The Minority in Parliament has dismissed the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, calling it dull and short on the details Ghanaians need to hear.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, delivered the response after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson presented the review to the House on Thursday, July 23.
The Effutu MP said the Minister’s address was filled with sweeping claims about what government has achieved, but lacked hard data and proof to back them up. According to Afenyo-Markin, the mid-year update failed to meet expectations for transparency and accountability, especially on public spending, disbursements made, and the status of major policy programmes.
He also asked why the government did not break down the payments it says it has honoured, arguing that both Parliament and the public have a right to full disclosure on how state funds are used.
The Minority Leader further accused the administration of leaning on rhetoric instead of offering real answers to the economic and social pressures citizens are facing.
“This review is just big grammar with no receipts. You say you’ve made payments, so where are the details?” “Mr. Speaker, this review offers no hope and no direction. What Ghanaians are going through right now is persecution. You are persecuting people and yet you come here to talk about managing the economy.”Afenyo-Markin also expressed worry over the current political climate, claiming that some people are being targeted while government portrays itself as focused on fixing the economy.
He cast doubt on government’s claims of progress, saying the successes touted in the review do not match what many Ghanaians are experiencing on the ground.
