The Minority Caucus in Parliament has charged the government to immediately settle outstanding tuition and related fees owed to Ghanaian students studying in the United Kingdom (UK) on government scholarships.
The caucus received formal complaints from affected students, warning that delays in payment could jeopardise their academic status and immigration standing.
The students, mostly pursuing postgraduate programmes, face pressure from institutions due to unpaid fees, risking academic and immigration penalties, including possible deportation. Presenting the issue in Parliament on March 16, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin described the situation as alarming and urged government intervention.
“Students at Birmingham University face deportation due to unpaid fees; we plead with the Scholarship Secretariat to remit the fees,” he said, warning that Ghana’s reputation is at stake. The government must act promptly to prevent further distress to students sponsored in prestigious UK institutions.
