The Minority Caucus in Parliament has emphasised its determination to continue resisting the Speaker’s decision to notify the Electoral Commission (EC) of the vacancy in the Kpandai constituency.
The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, stated that the Minority will maintain its protest, citing concerns over the Speaker’s inconsistency and potential breach of constitutional principles.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Assafuah questioned the Speaker’s sudden change of stance, describing it as unexpected and contradictory to earlier rulings. He stressed that the Minority’s actions are driven by a commitment to upholding constitutional supremacy and democratic values.
“The Minority will sustain its resistance for at least a week or two, and we will do so within the confines of the law,” Mr. Assafuah stated. He added that the move is necessary to send a signal that the Minority will not cooperate with government business as long as the issue remains unresolved.
Mr. Assafuah’s comments follow a tumultuous parliamentary session, with Minority MPs disrupting proceedings, prompting a confrontation with Majority MPs. The Speaker had ruled that proceedings should continue, despite the Minority’s insistence that the matter be addressed first. The session was marked by loud chants, shouts, and a scuffle between MPs, with marshals struggling to restore calm.
