The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed, has rendered an unconditional apology after his remarks to a basic school pupil drew heavy public criticism.
A video from his recent visit to Parliament went viral, showing the MP praising the young girl’s looks and telling her he would marry her when she is older. The comment triggered widespread condemnation online.
Speaking to journalists after the backlash, Mr. Mohammed admitted his words were out of line. He said the statement caused unease for the pupil, her family and the public, especially women.
The legislator expressed regret over the incident and offered apologies to the child, her parents and Ghanaians at large. “It is something that I am truly sorry for, and I don’t think it will happen again. Irrespective of everything, I will be cautious,” he said.
Mr. Mohammed added that he is working to reach the MP in whose constituency the school is located. The plan, he said, is to arrange a visit to the school to personally apologise to the girl and her family. He stressed that he takes full responsibility for what happened and will make sure nothing like it occurs again. The uproar followed the video where Mr. Mohammed is heard saying to the pupil:
“You are very beautiful; when you grow up, I will marry you, so she is my wife. In future she will also be an MP.” The clip sparked debate across social media, with many questioning the judgment of public officials when engaging with children and urging more awareness and sensitivity.
