The Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, Worlase Kpeli, has advocated a thorough review and sanitization of Ghana’s broadcasting landscape. This call comes after President John Dramani Mahama directed the restoration of licenses for 64 radio stations previously suspended by the National Communications Authority (NCA) due to regulatory breaches.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Mr. Kpeli referenced a statement by Communications Minister Sam George, highlighting that despite over 600 licensed radio stations in Ghana, many remain inactive. He argued that hoarding frequencies without utilizing them productively hinders media development and grants undue control to a few individuals.
“The spectrum has become so choked, and some have the license and the waves and do not use them, for what reason they keep them, no one knows,” Kpeli stated. “It is not good for business, it is not good for the media as the fourth estate of the country, as we see now. It means it is hijacked by some people who think they have the power to acquire it and leave it unused.”
Mr. Kpeli’s remarks emphasize the need for a more efficient and equitable use of Ghana’s broadcasting spectrum.
