The Mfantseman-Saltpond Development Alliance (MSDA) has renewed calls on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his pledge to return the national Founders’ Day celebration to Saltpond.
MSDA President Ernest De-Graft Egyir said the move would recognise Saltpond’s historical contribution to Ghana’s political development and boost efforts to promote tourism and development in the area.
He recalled that then opposition leader Mahama made the pledge during the 2023 Odambea Festival, and appealed to him to honour it.
“CPP was formed in Saltpond. UGCC was formed in Saltpond. And for that matter, if we are celebrating a National Founders’ Day, it will be good that it is brought to Saltpond,” Mr Egyir said.
He also called for political unity among leaders in Mfantseman and urged citizens in the diaspora to support development initiatives in the town.
The MSDA is targeting GH¢500,000 for its next major project, the Saltpond Centre of Excellence, which will provide recreational, educational, tourism, library and youth development facilities.
The Alliance has already raised GH¢300,000 and previously commissioned an automated water supply system for the Saltpond Municipal Hospital.
The calls were made during the second Saltpondfest Homecoming and Ayerye Festival, held under the theme, “Building Saltpond Together: From Homecoming to Sustainable Development.”
Traditional leaders at the event also urged residents, particularly the youth, to promote unity, acquire skills and contribute to the development of Saltpond.
