Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has denied that her brother’s meeting with ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor was about mending their family rift.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 28, Adwoa Safo said Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena approached the former President to lobby for support in his bid to head the Kristo Asafo Mission, not to settle their dispute.
She said she had earlier embraced her brother’s attempts to reconnect and believed they were moving toward healing before things shifted. Despite welcoming him and even helping with his children’s school fees, she said she was let down by what followed. “I thought we were on the same path — peace, reconciliation, reunion,” she said.
“He didn’t go to President Kufuor for reconciliation. He went to President Kufuor to ask him to speak to me so he could become head of the church,” she stated. She stressed that choosing the next leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission was not her decision. It must, she said, reflect the congregation’s wishes and the directives their late father left behind.
Adwoa Safo added that she cannot back her brother’s leadership claim because of changes and instructions their father reportedly made before he died. The remarks come after Akofena claimed he had tried several times to reconcile with his sister amid disagreements over their father’s funeral plans.
Akofena, who leads the Kristo Asafo Mission, said he had consulted religious and traditional leaders to restore harmony between them. The disagreement has also spilled into arrangements for the final rites of Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, with the Mission earlier saying it had not received official notice of any agreed funeral date. Adwoa Safo, however, insisted the funeral schedule is set. She announced that burial activities will start on Thursday, July 30, with other rites to follow.
