A three-day intelligence-led operation by security agencies has led to the dismantling of a major illegal mining site at Wakawaka in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.

The operation was led by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in collaboration with the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Bole Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service.

The operation was triggered by a viral social media video showing thousands of illegal miners excavating in the area.

According to officials, the raid resulted in the seizure of one excavator, seven motorcycles, one tricycle, two excavator power control units, a locally manufactured firearm and assorted mining equipment.

The joint task force also destroyed 35 chanfang machines and more than 100 makeshift structures used by the illegal miners.

All seized items have been secured by the authorities pending investigations and the necessary legal and administrative processes.

Officials said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities and protect water bodies and forest reserves in the Savannah Region.
