Nana Ama Bonsu has been officially outdoored as the new Asantehemaa (Queen Mother of Asante), succeeding the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
The traditional ceremony was held on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, marking a significant milestone in the leadership of the Asante Kingdom.
Her installation as the 15th Asantehemaa brings to an end the transition period following the death of Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who served as the 14th Asantehemaa until her passing in 2025.
The position became vacant after the demise of Nana Konadu Yiadom III, necessitating the selection of a successor to occupy one of the most influential traditional offices in Asanteman.
The Asantehemaa plays a pivotal role in the governance and preservation of the Asante Kingdom. Beyond serving as Queen Mother, she is the custodian of the royal matrilineal lineage and is responsible for nominating a successor to the Golden Stool whenever the office of the Asantehene becomes vacant.
The office also carries significant responsibilities in promoting Asante customs and traditions, advising the traditional leadership, and championing the welfare of women, children and the broader Asante community.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III was installed as the 14th Asantehemaa in 2017 by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II following the death of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the mother of the Asantehene and one of the longest-serving queen mothers in the history of the Asante Kingdom.
The outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu is widely regarded as a continuation of the centuries-old chieftaincy and governance traditions that have shaped the Asante Kingdom.
The Manhyia Palace is expected to release further details on the background and profile of the new Asantehemaa in the coming days.
