The National Peace Council has condemned a surge in violence across senior high schools, following six student-related assault cases recorded within a single week.
In a press release dated February 25, 2026, the Council described the incidents as deeply worrying and called on the Ghana Education Service, parents and other stakeholders to take urgent steps to restore order and safety in schools.
The reported cases spanned at least four regions and involved multiple institutions.
In the Central Region, a student of Obrachire Senior High School was hospitalised after being attacked during a district athletics competition. At the Super Zonal sports festival in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, two serious incidents were recorded. A female student of Osino Presbyterian SHS was allegedly gang raped, while a final-year student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed.
In the Greater Accra Region, teachers at West Africa Senior High School were reportedly assaulted by students from Frafraha Community Senior High School.
Meanwhile, in Cape Coast, a final-year student of Adisadel College was attacked by six students from Aggrey Memorial School during an inter-colleges sports festival.
The Council noted that the Ghana Police Service has arrested most of the suspects involved in the various incidents. While acknowledging that the Ghana Education Service has publicly condemned the attacks and announced disciplinary measures, the Council expressed support for a directive from the Ministry of Education to fast-track investigations.
It further called for enhanced security presence in schools and at sporting events, as well as strengthened counselling services to address rising indiscipline among students.
The Council appealed to parents and guardians to play a more active role in instilling discipline, tolerance and respect in their wards.
It assured that it would continue its sensitisation programmes in schools, promoting peace, tolerance and non-violent conflict resolution, and urged educational authorities and other stakeholders to adopt firm policies to ensure schools remain safe spaces for learning.
