The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has changed the name of its national headquarters to honour its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and revealed a statue of the late ex-President during events celebrating his lasting impact.
The event, staged on Monday, June 22, 2026, was part of a lineup of programmes planned to observe what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday. Staged under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” the commemoration aims to honour the life, leadership and impact of the late statesman on Ghana’s political growth and democratic rule.
The day’s programme opened with the formal renaming of the party’s headquarters after Rawlings, a symbolic move meant to keep alive the memory of the man widely recognised for establishing the NDC and molding Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
This was followed by the unveiling of a bust dedicated to him at the party’s headquarters. Top party executives, members and dignitaries assembled for the occasion, which emphasised Rawlings’ role in Ghana’s democratic path and the ongoing importance of his principles within the party.
President John Dramani Mahama is anticipated to attend the event and give remarks, together with other key party leaders, as part of tributes to the former military chief-turned-democrat. Rawlings, who died in November 2020, stands as one of the most significant personalities in Ghana’s modern political story.
Late President Rawlings governed the nation first as a military leader before guiding the shift to constitutional rule and holding office as Ghana’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.The renaming of the party headquarters and the unveiling of the bust highlight the NDC’s push to salute the heritage of its founder and restate the values and principles he promoted during his public career.
