The Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the arrest and detention of New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi). Wontumi was arrested on May 27 over alleged financial malfeasance involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank) and remains in custody despite being granted bail.
Mumuni expressed concerns about the legality and implications of the situation, stating that the failure to release Wontumi within the 48-hour constitutional window sets a troubling precedent. “This is dangerous to our democracy, and they are setting a very bad precedent in this country,” he said.
The MP warned that if such actions are left unchecked, it could lead to a cycle of political retribution that would harm Ghana’s democratic institutions. He urged state institutions to maintain independence and professionalism, cautioning against the weaponization of legal processes for political gain.
