The Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe, has underscored the need for ongoing improvements in road safety infrastructure and enforcement following the legalisation of commercial motorcycle operations.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, which was monitored by the Ghanaianradar.com, Mr Nikpe noted that the lack of dedicated traffic signs and signals for motor riders has been a longstanding challenge.
The government plans to introduce new road safety measures, including traffic signs and upgraded traffic lights, to improve safety for all road users. “The transport sector needs improvement daily. We lack dedicated traffic signs for motor riders, but now that they’re legal, we’ll see changes, including new traffic lights,” he said.
Mr Nikpe stressed that improving road safety requires infrastructure, discipline, and enforcement. He cited Togo as an example, where stricter law enforcement and personal discipline contribute to better road safety outcomes. The Minister called for collaboration among key ministries to enforce traffic regulations, including seizing vehicles and withdrawing drivers’ licences for offenders.
The measures aim to improve road discipline, reduce accidents, and create a safer transport environment as the sector undergoes reforms.
