At least nine people are feared dead, with two others still missing, following a tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko, along the route from Yeji to Congo. The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly capsized after encountering severe weather conditions.

Initial reports indicate that seven people—two women and five children—have been confirmed dead, while five male passengers were rescued. Rescue teams have so far retrieved seven bodies from the lake, with one woman and one child still unaccounted for.

Authorities noted that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, a factor believed to have contributed to the high number of casualties.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with local emergency services continuing operations to locate the remaining victims.
