The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reiterated his strong stance against LGBTQ+ activities, emphasizing that Ghana’s cultural and moral fabric doesn’t support such practices. Speaking during a visit to Uganda, Bagbin described LGBTQ+ as a foreign imposition that Ghana will resist.
“We will not accept the world they’re trying to impose on us. LGBT is not African, it’s not natural, and God didn’t create it. This is an imposition we must all resist,” he declared.
Bagbin’s comments come amid ongoing debates on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana. The bill, passed by Parliament during the 8th Parliament, didn’t receive presidential assent before the term ended. Private individuals filed legal challenges at the Supreme Court, questioning the bill’s constitutionality.
Bagbin remains resolute, stating, “Nobody should joke with me when it comes to this area. I can lose my life because of that. It’s better not to live than to live in a society where man marries man and woman marries woman. What is that?” ¹
The Speaker has instructed the Clerk of Parliament to transmit the bill to the President for assent, despite an injunction. He believes Parliament is the authority on passing laws, not the President.
