The Northern Regional Minister, Adolf John Ali, has disclosed that diplomat and visual artist Ibrahim Mahama, together with the Regional Police Commander, is expected to meet the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) as part of ongoing investigations into an alleged assault case.
The meeting, scheduled for today, forms part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident, which reportedly occurred on March 21, 2026.
Mr Mahama has alleged that he was assaulted by individuals believed to be members of the Ghana Police Service Special Operations Team. At a press conference on March 23, he detailed injuries he and his uncle sustained, including a broken tooth and lip, and indicated his intention to pursue legal action.
He also called for justice for all victims of similar incidents and urged authorities to disband the so-called “Black Maria” team.
However, the Special Operations Team has denied any involvement in the alleged assault. Their commander, Bawah Abdul Jalil, has rejected the claims.
Speaking to the media in Tamale, Mr Ali assured that the Regional Security Council is committed to ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation. He noted that he personally visited Mr Mahama and directed medical personnel to provide him with the best possible care.
“As Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council, it is my duty to protect every Ghanaian. We will ensure that justice is served,” he said.
Mr Ali added that he receives daily updates from the Regional Police Commander on developments in the case.
He also addressed concerns that the matter could escalate along political or chieftaincy lines, particularly amid heightened discussions on social media. He stressed that the investigation would remain strictly professional and free from external influences.
“We are not bringing any sect into the issue, whether chieftaincy or politics. The matter will be handled purely on its merits,” he stated.
The Minister further emphasised that if any wrongdoing is established following the IGP’s investigations, appropriate recommendations and actions will be taken in line with the law.
