Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed suggestions that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds a personal grudge against the Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the Minority’s questions were directed at how GoldBod was being run and were not meant as attacks on the CEO personally. His remarks come after Mr. Gyamfi labelled the Minority Leader’s criticism as “bitter” and said he was prepared to appear before Parliament to answer for GoldBod’s activities.
Mr. Gyamfi had also said that Mr. Afenyo-Markin and other NPP members were making comments about GoldBod without presenting concrete allegations that needed a reply.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated that he and former Finance Minister, Abena Osei-Asare, bear no personal ill-will toward Mr. Gyamfi.
“Sammy, NPP, nobody hates you. Abena Osei Asare doesn’t hate you. I don’t hate you. We want the best for you. Some of the people you think are your friends today that you deploy to attack us merely for questioning certain actions at GoldBod may not be there tomorrow. “So take it easy, when we raise issues, take your time and respond. Don’t come and attack us and don’t engage others to attack us because we criticised GoldBod,” he said.
The Minority Leader advised Mr. Gyamfi to be more open to scrutiny, recalling how outspoken he was when the NPP was in power. “You were very loud, Sammy, when you were in opposition. You raised critical issues; you were the loudest, so you should have a certain level of tolerance to listen because most of these issues are what have been reported by the IMF and institutions that are credible. We are not after your person,” he added.
