A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and private lawyer, Kwasi Kwarteng, has urged former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to return to Ghana and submit to the country’s judicial process, saying it will bring closure to the growing controversy surrounding him.
Mr Ofori-Atta’s recent release from U.S. immigration detention has sparked fresh debate, with Ghana seeking his extradition to face trial.
Speaking on Channel One TV which was monitored by Ghanaianradar, Mr Kwarteng emphasised that Ofori-Atta should use the courts to clear his name, stressing that Ghana’s constitution guarantees a fair hearing. He noted that public figures must be accountable, especially when allegations involve state funds.
He added that avoiding scrutiny won’t help, and that Ofori-Atta should face the allegations head-on.”If I were him, I’d return and clear my name,” Kwarteng said, adding that the constitution presumes innocence until proven guilty. Ofori-Atta faces over 70 charges in Ghana related to alleged financial mismanagement, and the government is pushing for his return.
The case is ongoing, with the next steps hinging on U.S. judicial decisions. Mr Kwarteng further stressed that public office comes with responsibilities and that accountability is key, especially in matters involving alleged financial losses to the state. He urged Ofori-Atta to take responsibility and clear his name through due process.
