The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has condemned the recent violence in Nkwanta South, describing the killing of 25-year-old food vendor Richmond Benye Ayitey on Saturday, May 3, 2026, as barbaric and unacceptable.
On behalf of the Oti Regional Coordinating Council, the Minister extended condolences to the bereaved family and appealed for calm as security agencies intensify investigations into the incident.
He assured residents that security agencies have been directed to take decisive action to restore public confidence and safeguard lives and property. According to him, all individuals involved in the attack will be apprehended and prosecuted, stressing that impunity will not be tolerated.
Mr Gyapong reaffirmed the commitment of the Oti Regional Security Council to achieving lasting peace in Nkwanta South, warning that no individual or group would be permitted to destabilise the area.
He further urged all feuding factions to immediately cease hostilities and pursue resolution through lawful and traditional mechanisms, emphasising dialogue as the only acceptable means of addressing disputes.
The Minister also expressed concern over reports that two suspects previously arrested with ammunition and a weapon had been released, noting that the development has heightened tension and undermined public confidence.
He cautioned that authorities may be compelled to review existing security measures if the situation deteriorates, including a possible revision of curfew hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Mr Gyapong appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, provide credible information, and refrain from actions or statements that could escalate tensions.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over security in Nkwanta South, where authorities continue efforts to contain the conflict and prevent further escalation.
