The People’s National Party (PNP) has strongly condemned President John Dramani Mahama’s alleged attempt to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office. In a statement, PNP Chairperson and Leader, Janet Nabla, expressed disappointment, arguing that Mahama’s actions contradict his campaign pledges to empower women.
The controversy stems from three petitions submitted to the President by a section of the public, calling for the removal of Justice Torkonoo. However, the PNP believes this move undermines Mahama’s commitment to the Affirmative Action Law and the promised 30% representation of women in his administration.
According to the PNP, Mahama’s actions suggest that his priority is not governance but manipulating the system to secure victory in the 2028 elections. The party called on the president to shift his focus back to addressing economic challenges and fulfilling his campaign promises to Ghanaians.
It’s worth noting that similar petitions have been filed against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in the past, including one by US-based Ghanaian Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare. However, the PNP’s statement highlights the party’s concerns about the potential implications of Mahama’s actions on women’s empowerment and governance.
