The Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery at Buipe in the Savanna Region, resulting in the arrest of two suspects and the death of two others during a subsequent intelligence-led operation.
According to a police statement, the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a patrol team on duty along the Yapei–Tamale road encountered three armed men who opened fire on an armoured police vehicle. Officers returned fire, forcing the assailants to flee the scene. A locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge were later retrieved.
Follow-up operations the next day led to the arrest of two suspects—Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan,” and Umar Seidu—in Tamale. During interrogation, the suspects admitted they had planned a robbery at Yapei but abandoned the operation after being involved in a motor accident. They also confessed to participating in the earlier attack on the police patrol and identified three accomplices: Babuga, Kilor, and Malami.
Acting on this information, police recovered a single-barrel shotgun with a shortened barrel and five rounds of ammunition from a location along the Yapei–Salaga road.
On April 29, further intelligence from Osman Abdulai led officers to a guest house in Buipe, where two additional suspects were located. During the operation, one suspect—identified as Babuga—allegedly attacked officers with a machete and was shot. Both individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to the Buipe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and dismantle the wider robbery network.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Service stated it will continue to pursue criminal elements and encouraged the public to provide information to the nearest police station or via the toll-free number 18555.
