The Ghana Police Service has suspended five of its officers after they appeared in widely shared clips taking actions seen as tarnishing the Service’s image.
Some viral footage shows officers halting illegal miners and reportedly asking for cash rather than upholding the law at a galamsey location.
In a release from the Public Affairs Directorate on Monday, 4 May, the Police said the officers have been sent to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for probe under internal disciplinary rules.
“The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five (5) personnel sighted in viral videos engaging in acts that tend to put the name of the Service into disrepute,” the statement said.
The officers listed include Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei of the Osu Police Station in Accra, Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District.
The statement added that the Service restated its pledge to professionalism and accountability as inquiries continue.“The Ghana Police Service reiterates its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, and assures the public that appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation,” it added.
