Certain areas in the Greater Accra Region will face short power cuts this weekend as GRIDCo carries out repairs and scheduled upkeep on the damaged Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, said the scheduled maintenance will last a few hours and is required to enable the repair work to be done safely.
The line was affected near Ashaiman Middle East when a fuel tanker undergoing welding under it blew up. A section of the tanker was hurled over 300 metres into a transmission pylon, damaging its structure.
Dr Jinapor urged residents likely to be impacted by the brief outages to be patient, noting that the shutdown is needed to help restore the stability and safety of the grid.
“These interruptions will be necessary to facilitate the works and ensure the safety and reliability of the transmission system,” he said.
