The Editor of Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama that failing to dismiss Sammy Gyamfi as Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board could undermine the credibility of the newly launched Code of Conduct for presidential appointees. The warning follows a viral video showing Gyamfi handing over US dollars to evangelist Nana Agradaa, sparking public outrage.
The incident has raised questions about Gyamfi’s actions and the values of integrity, accountability, and transparency that the Code of Conduct aims to uphold. Darko emphasized that the situation is a critical test for President Mahama’s leadership and the effectiveness of the new code.
“If the president fails to sack Sammy Gyamfi, it means that he has set a certain precedent that if others should breach the code, he will not sack them,” Darko warned. He highlighted the potential internal fallout within the NDC if the code is perceived to be enforced selectively.
Darko noted that the president is in a difficult position, either sacking Gyamfi to maintain the code’s integrity or accepting his apology and retaining him, which could send a wrong signal. Meanwhile, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has summoned Gyamfi for questioning amid growing pressure on the presidency to act decisively.
