New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman aspirant Sammy Crabbe has maintained that his suspension from the party in 2015 was not driven by opposition to then-presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Mr Crabbe, who was an NPP Vice Chairman at the time, said he took a stand because he believed the party had failed to follow its constitution in suspending then-Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
“I did not go in support of my chairman. I went to protect the constitution,” he said.
Speaking on Citi FM on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Mr Crabbe said his concern was not whether the allegations against the two executives were justified but whether the correct constitutional procedures had been followed.
He argued that elected party officers could not be removed through ordinary disciplinary procedures because the NPP constitution provides specific mechanisms for dealing with such matters.
“You can’t use the disciplinary process to remove an officer. NEC cannot do it, council cannot do it. No, no, it’s very clear in our constitution,” he said.
Mr Crabbe acknowledged that his position at the time could have been interpreted as support for factions opposed to Nana Akufo-Addo. He, however, insisted that his actions were based solely on his obligation to uphold the party’s constitution.
“I’m so happy that I said and did what I did because that’s exactly what they did,” he said.
He said the 2015 controversy highlighted the importance of protecting the tenure of elected party officials and ensuring that disciplinary measures do not undermine internal democracy within the NPP.
