Sammy Gyamfi Says Gold Board Appointment Came as a Surprise

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has revealed that his appointment to the role came as an unexpected but humbling moment in his career.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, he said the call from John Mahama caught him off guard.

“For me, it was an exciting call made by the president,” he said.

Mr Gyamfi described his relationship with the President as one that extends beyond politics, referring to him as a father figure who has played a key role in his personal and professional development.

“He’s not just our President, but someone I’ve shared a father-son relationship with for some time,” he noted, adding that he views the President as a visionary leader.

He admitted that his appointment was not widely anticipated, particularly given his background in political communication.

“Many, including myself, thought I would likely take up a communication-related role,” he said.

According to him, the President’s decision reflects a deeper confidence in his abilities beyond public expectations.

“He saw something in me that many had not noticed and decided to give me this opportunity,” he added.

Mr Gyamfi also acknowledged the support of Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister, describing him as “like a brother” as they work together to advance reforms in the gold sector.

He emphasised the strategic importance of gold to the government’s broader economic agenda, noting that efforts are underway to address longstanding challenges such as revenue leakages and low foreign exchange repatriation.

“Gold is central to the President’s reset agenda,” he said, stressing the need to ensure greater national control over extraction and trading, while maximising benefits for the economy.

Despite acknowledging that many qualified individuals could have been considered for the role, Mr Gyamfi described his appointment as a rare privilege.

“For me to have been given this opportunity is something I am deeply grateful for,” he said, adding that he remains committed to justifying the confidence placed in him.

He noted that his daily focus is to work diligently and deliver results that reflect the trust reposed in him.
