Information reaching Ghanaian RADAR points to a growing chieftaincy tension in the Senya Beraku, a fishing community in the Awutu Senya Traditional Area of the Central Region.
The tension stems from the allegedly destooled Paramount Chief of Senya Beraku, Nenyi Kwaku Issiw VI, deciding to celebrate the 2025 annual Akomase Festival.
It has emerged that Nenyi Kwaku Issiw VI from the Royal Twidan family has been reportedly destooled as the Omanhene (Paramount Chief) by the two Asafo companies: Tuawo Asafo No. 1 and Dentsewo Asafo No. 2. He was reported to have been destooled over misconduct concerns.
Ghanaian RADAR was reliably informed that Nana Issiw VI’s removal is also recognised by the Central Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, who previously have expressed concerns about Nenyi Kwaku Issiw VI’s conduct.
Following this, the Anona Royal family enstooled Nenyi Akondoh Kow Nkwanta II as new Chief, approved by Asafo kingmakers.
However, a chieftaincy dispute over the Senya Bereku Royal Stool remains pending before the Central Regional House of Chiefs’ Judicial Committee – a 20-year rivalry between Twidan and Anona families.
Defying the unresolved case, Issiw VI launched the festival, which development the chiefs, elders, and Asafo companies in the traditional area have described as “contempt of court,” appealing urgently to the Interior Minister, IGP, and Local Government Minister to intervene.
In the light of the above, angry Asafo members have warned Issiw VI to stay away to “avoid bloodshed.”
Leader Okyeame Kofi Annan declared at a press conference: “We won’t allow him,” demanding security reinforcement.
“Those claiming Omanhene title must stay away… allow youth to celebrate peacefully.” He appealed to the Local Government Minister, President, and security agencies to resolve the dispute,” Annan further urged.
The Omanhene, Nenyi Akondoh Kow Nkwanta II, called for peace and unity. He entreated citizens to return home for development.
Meanwhile, scores of chiefs in the area have pressed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, to intensify security “to save lives and properties,” while appealing to the Awutu Senya West DCE and MP to maintain peace.
The Royal Twidan and Anona families have contested Senya Bereku’s chieftaincy for two decades.
