Several people are feared dead following a serious collision involving a tipper truck and a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway on Thursday morning.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that between eight and ten people may have died, while several others sustained injuries. The casualty figure had not been officially confirmed as rescue operations continued.
The collision severely damaged the Sprinter bus, leaving several passengers trapped in the wreckage.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other emergency responders were deployed to the scene to rescue trapped victims and provide assistance to survivors.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS, rescue teams were working to extricate victims from the mangled vehicle and transport those with serious injuries to medical facilities.
Among those rescued was a woman who reportedly sustained severe injuries, including the loss of both legs, and was evacuated from the scene by ambulance.
The GNFS described the situation as challenging as emergency personnel continued rescue and recovery operations.
The crash has also disrupted traffic along the highway, with part of the road temporarily restricted to allow emergency teams to operate safely.
The GNFS has urged motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane, exercise extreme caution and give way to emergency responders as rescue and clearance operations continue.
